The South Shore has consistent swells between May and October. Pk’s (Prince Kuhio’s) is located in front of the Beach House restaurant and is a fun right and left break for all levels of surfers and a favorite with the local groms. Centers and Acid Drop are for more experienced surfers as well as the breaks along Poipu Beach fronting the Waiohai. Beginners and keiki learn to surf at Lemon Drops in front of Kiahuna Plantation.
Kalapaki beach on the south-east shore is a shallow left and right sandbar break with an easy paddle-out for beginners. The more experienced surfers hang on the outside at Ammonias. Also on the east coast is Kealia Beach, popular with the locals throughout the summer.
The winter swells wrap around the North Shore between November and February. Hanalei Bay offers a variety of breaks for all levels. The pier is best for beginners. Other North Shore spots include Cannons and Kalihiwai Point. On the west side the preferred breaks for locals and experienced surfers are at Pikalas and out at Polihale.
